NYPD Demands Google Remove Police Checkpoint Warnings in Waze App

The NYPD wants Google to stop displaying drunk driving checkpoints in their maps!????According to NBC News, the NYPD reached out to Waze, a navigation app that Google acquired in 2013.????The NYPD wants the app to deactivate the feature in question, which allows its users to crowd source locations of drunk driving checkpoints and speed traps.????In the letter, the NYPD acting deputy commissioner for legal matters said:????“Individuals who post the locations of DWI checkpoints may be engaging in criminal conduct since such actions could be intentional attempts to prevent and/or impair the administration of the DWI laws and other relevant criminal and traffic laws.

Revealing the location of checkpoints puts those drivers, their passengers and the general public at risk."??However, Google is pushing back.

While not addressing drunk driving checkpoints, they did write this In an email to The Hill.??"Safety is a top priority when developing navigation features at Google.

We believe that informing drivers about upcoming speed traps allows them to be more careful and make safer decisions when they're on the road,.??This isn’t the first time the Waze app has come under fire from the NYPD.

In 2015, the Sergeants Benevolent Association demanded it remove a feature that allowed the tracking of police officer locations, which they believe put officers at risk.
