Coimbatore: The city police on Wednesday formally arrested BJP functionary Kalyan Raman, who is in Coimbatore central prison, for his blasphemous remarks against Muslims on Facebook.

Kalyan Raman was arrested based on a complaint filed on November 18 by Mohammed Nowfal of Karumbukadai with the Kuniyamuthur police.

A police officer said, “Raman had posted remarks on Facebook showing Muslim community in poor light. The posts were blasphemous in nature and hurt the sentiments of Muslims.”

Popular Front of India (PFI) and Indian National League (INL) had also petitioned Coimbatore city police commissioner Sumit Sharan seeking action against Kalyan Raman.TNN
