Farmers call off NH blockade over paddy procurement after 55 hours
TNN | Feb 6, 2019, 23:21 ISTSambalpur: The farmers of Deogarh district, who had blocked the NH-53 at Chhatabar since Monday morning to protest against the closure of Naulipada market yard before the completion of paddy procurement, called off their stir on Wednesday, almost 55 hours after they put up the road blockade.
The agitators lifted the blockade after they were assured that all the paddy would be procured from the farmers.
The Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society or (PACS) had reportedly set a target of procuring 39,000 quintal of paddy from farmers of five gram panchayats including Budido, Malehipada, Kantabahal, Lulong and Naulipada in Deogarh district, which are attached to Nualipada PACS.
However, the Nualipada PACS authorities stopped paddy procurement from Sunday following a state government directive to not to procure paddy after February 4. But the Nualipada PACS had procured only 16,000 quintal paddy by then.
