US President Donald Trump delivered the much awaited State of the Union address on February 5, 2019. Here is what Donald Trump said during the speech which got delayed this year due to US Government shutdown.
US-Mexico border wall
Declaring emphatically that he "will get the wall built", President Trump urged lawmakers in the Democratic and Republican parties to come together to "secure the Southern border.
He said the situation there was "lawless" and many "illegal aliens" are coming through to commit crimes in the US.
Trump has often used the term "aliens" to describe immigrants though he maintains that he is against illegal immigrants and not against those who are residing in America legally.
On Foreign Policy
Trump said he will meet North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un on February 27 and 28 in Vietnam. This will be the second meet between the leaders
Donald Trump hinted at reducing US presence in Afghanistan. He said that America will now focus on counter-terrorism. He has already announced the withdrawal of US troops from Syria. Donald Trump said that American forces are needed to enhance security "back home"
He officially declared that the US is withdrawing from the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces (INF) treaty with Russia.
Calling the Iranian regime "radical", Donald Trump said that everything must be done to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
On abortion laws
Trump expressed displeasure over progressive abortion legislation enacted by states like New York and said that these laws "would allow a baby to be ripped from the mother's womb moments before birth". He was cheered on by the conservative lawmakers in the house.
However, Trump received widespread criticism for his comments. US Senator Kamala Harris asked Donald Trump to not tell women what to do with their bodies.
