Commemorative illustration unveiled at Lakkaram tank bund

In a befitting tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, an epitome of peace and humanity, the district administration unveiled the illustration of a commemorative embossed sculpture at Lakkaram tank bund here on Tuesday marking the momentous occasion of Gandhiji’s visit to the town on this day exactly 73 years ago.

It was on February 5, 1946, that the Father of the Nation visited the town during the Independence movement spearheading a non-violent resistance to free the country from the clutches of British rule.

Khammam MLA Puvvada Ajay Kumar inaugurated the memorial on the picturesque tank bund abutting the renovated Lakkaram lake on Tuesday evening.

Khammam Mayor G. Papa Lal and Collector R.V. Karnan were also present at the inauguration.

Collector’s idea

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ajay commended the initiative of Mr Karnan for conceptualising the idea of immortalising Gandhiji’s visit to the town and making it a reality to coincide with the 73rd anniversary of that day.

Mr Karnan said Gandhiji led a simple and righteous life inspiring millions across the world through his non-violent freedom struggle.

A complete commemorative sculpture in a fibre panel will be installed on Lakkaram tank bund soon, he said, adding that the memorial will help spread Gandhiji’s ideals.
