Yorke’s photographs on show at Nagoba Jatara

An exhibition of 200 photographs taken by British anthropologist and filmmaker Michael Yorke nearly four decades ago is being held on the sidelines of the Nagoba jatara in Keslapur village of Indervelli mandal here.

The photos were clicked at various places, including the jatara itself, when Mr. Yorke was conducting anthropological studies of Raj Gonds of Adilabad based in Ginnedhari, now in Tiryani mandal of Kumram Bheem Asifabad district.

Telangana Tribal Welfare Commissioner Christina Z. Chongthu inaugurated the exhibition on Tuesday.

The exhibition took Mr. Yorke down the memory lane as he recognised characters and subjects in the mostly black-and-white photographs, when he presented himself for the inauguration. He pointed out people and musical instruments to his wife Valerie who had accompanied him.

Mr. Yorke and Valerie offered prayers to the deity at the Nagoba temple and visited various sections of the jatara familiarising themselves with the event.

The couple was felicitated by the Mesram clan Raj Gond elders who oversee the conduct of the event. They spent time in Govad meeting womenfolk, including some who had been admitted into the Mesram clan after their marriage during the ‘bheting’ ritual of introduction to the serpent god.
