Rash riding by bikers leaves cyclist dead

Thiruvananthapuram: A 45-year-old cyclist was killed after he was knocked down by a speeding motorcycle on which three youths were riding. The accident occurred at Vattavila under Vizhinjam police station limits on Tuesday night. Viju, a resident of Darbhavila House, Punnakkulam, Kottukal under Vizhinjam police station limits is the deceased. He was a daily-wage labourer.
According to the police, the accident occurred around 7.30pm as Viju was going home after work. The local residents rushed both Viju and the youths to the hospital. But, Viju succumbed to his injuries around 10.30pm. The youths are under treatment at Medical College Hospital, the police said.

The police have registered a case in connection with the incident. Viju’s body was handed over to the family after conducting post-mortem examination on Wednesday. Viju leaves behind wife Latha and two children.


In another incident, two school students sustained minor injuries when their van collided with an excavator at Edappazhinji on Wednesday.


According to the police, the accident occurred around 8.45am. The van belonged to Saraswati Vidyalaya School. As the vehicle was heading towards the school, it collided with an excavator that was engaged in road works at Edappazhinji.


The students inside the van fell down in the impact of the collision. Two of them, Advaith and Goutham, were hospitalized after suffering injuries.
