Ruckus prevailed at the Thrissur Corporation council meeting on Wednesday following protest by Congress councillors.
The protesting Congress members were demanding revoking of decisions taken at a meeting held on December 10 without discussions amidst an Opposition agitation.
Today’s meeting was held against the backdrop of a letter given by 19 Congress members demanding cancellation of the decisions.
However, Mayor Ajitha Vijayan dispersed the meeting saying that a decision taken at the council could be reconsidered only after three months. She also alleged that the protest by the Opposition was unwarranted. It was for the second time that a council meeting had been held for the same purpose.
The Mayor dispersed a meeting on December 10 amidst protest by the Opposition. However, eight agendas, including the one related to payment of funds to the contractor for waste management, were passed without any discussion.
A meeting was called by the Mayor on December 24, when 21 Opposition members demanded cancellation of the minutes. But the Mayor dispersed that meeting without taking any decision. Later, the meeting was called on Wednesday after 19 Opposition members raised the same demand.
“The democratic rights have been killed in the council. We cannot take decisions without any discussion. We will continue our protest until the minutes of the controversial meeting are cancelled,” said Leader of the Opposition M.K. Mukundan.
