Initiative aimed at clearing backlog of complaints, says civic body Commissioner

The five-day special drive by the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) against unauthorised construction, illegal colonisation and encroachment across its 35 wards ended here on Tuesday. The drive was carried out in the wake of growing number of complaints at different platforms including the CM Window.

Encroachment and illegal construction on Sheetla Mata Road, Krishna Colony, Nathurpur, Civil Lines Road, Sector 5, Badshahpur village, Gadoli Khurd and the neighbouring areas were removed on the final day.

The MCG demolition squads knocked down unauthorised shops on Sheetla Mata Road and illegal construction in Krishna Colony.

MCG Commissioner Yashpal Yadav told The Hindu that the drive was aimed at clearing the backlog of complaints. “The message was loud and clear. It was conveyed to all and sundry in five days,” said Mr. Yadav.

Mr. Yadav said he had been directing his staff, including the Joint Commissioners, to initiate regular action against such illegal activities since he took over the charge in March last year, but was not satisfied with their performance.

“I, therefore, chalked out a comprehensive five-day-long programme myself and directed the staff to carry it out. With the backlog now cleared, they have been told to come out with innovative ideas to deal with the situation in the future,” said Mr. Yadav.

Illegal construction in violation of building by-laws, colonies being developed in violation of the law, encroachment on footpaths and any encroachment by shopkeepers on the road were the main targets.

Mr. Yadav said the MCG also took action in the areas falling under the jurisdiction of the Haryana Sahari Vikas Pradhikaran and Department of Town and Country Planning. He added that all agencies should come forward to take action against unauthorised construction and encroachment. He said that the consolidated figures on the action were being compiled and shared soon.
