4 hairstyles from Lakmé Fashion Week that even beginners can DIY
These no-muss, no-fuss hairstyles are going to be on trend this summer, which gives you more than enough time to perfect them

Amidst the pomp and the fare that usually makes up Lakmé Fashion Week summer/resort 2019, designers unified to send one cohesive message down the runway: with the temperatures steadily inching up, primped, high maintenance hairstyles are being given a timeout in favour of easy, wearable versions that champion second day hair and natural texture. Freshly seen on the summer/resort 2019 runways, here are the hairstyles you’re going to be wearing all summer long, with the step-by-step guide you need to help you get there.
The easiest hairstyles spotted at Lakmé Fashion Week summer/resort 2019
Messy, slicked back buns at Nikhil Thampi
If it works for Meghan Markle, it definitely works for us. The messy buns on Nikhil Thampi’s runway embraced flyaways, baby hairs and natural texture, but kept the strands at the crown tamped down. Since the hair was off the face, the molten-metal eyeshadow and sculpted cheekbones remained in focus.
When the temperature starts to rise, and hair starts getting sweaty and greasy in one night, this is the style you need. Start by finger-combing your locks with some lightweight mousse to provide texture. Use a water-based wax on the roots to add shine. Gather your hair back into a ponytail and secure it around the base with a rubber band. Twist the rest of the hair around the base of the ponytail into a loose bun and secure with another rubber band. Leave any wisps or stray locks outside to perfect the appearance of a fuss-free messy bun.
Boho braids at Punit Balana
Showstopper Karisma Kapoor took to the Punit Balana runway in a monochrome anarkali and a stellar braid. This type of voluminous dutch braid is ideal to pair with a lehenga or sari, but works just as well for brunch.
Get started on Kapoor’s look by rough-drying hair to maximise the natural wave pattern. Part your hair to the side, select two one inch pieces from near your hairline and start criss-crossing one under the other to make a tight braid. Once you reach the nape of your neck, secure with an elastic band and repeat twice on each side. For the remaining section of your hair, pull it to the right and start braiding loosely from beneath your neck. Once you’ve secured it in place, gently tug the coils of the braid without detaching any sections from the hairstyle to ‘pancake’ the braids, ie, make them look flatter. Spritz on a shine spray or light hold spray to secure.
Upgraded finger waves at Mohammed Mazhar
Retro finger waves don’t have to be too structured or coiffed. The models on the Mohammed Mazhar runway wore slicked back roots and voluminised finger waves at the ends. These look chic for a night out with friends when paired with sparkly eye makeup and a bold lip.
To create the imperfect tendrils, apply a mattifying spray to create texture and a piece-y effect. Part hair and then apply your flat iron in a back and forth motion along the surface of each 1.5 inch section of hair. Curve the flat iron to create a C-shaped wave towards your head, and then do the same in the opposite direction. This will create the S-shaped wave. Spray a heavy hold hairspray on each piece as you go, before spraying the whole hairstyle at the end.
Polished ponytails at Essé
There’s nothing like pulling your hair into a ponytail that can go from day to night: stay off your face at work and look on-trend after hours. The hairstyle at Essé was super sleek while being easy to recreate and maintain.
Start by brushing hair with a paddle brush and gathering it right below the crown of the head. Smooth the front and sides as you brush the hair back. Apply a a serum or hair gel that’ll provide hold but won’t add any crunchiness to smoothen the sides further. The best way to do this is to take it on your fingertips and press it into the hair. Spritz on a finishing hairspray to add hold and nix flyaways. Then, use a hair tie to secure, making sure to flatten any bumps. Take a small section of hair from the underside of the ponytail and wrap it around the ponytail to make it look truly polished.
