Ford unveils Super Duty version of its 2020 F-Series

In the past few weeks we’ve seen Chevrolet and GMC introduce the super duty versions of their Silverado and Sierra trucks, respectively, and RAM do the same with their HD model. Clearly it wouldn’t be too long before we heard from Ford. Sure enough, the automaker has just unveiled its revised 2020 F-Series Super Duty truck.

For the big news regarding the 2020 edition you have to look under the hood. While the base version still comes with a 6.2L V8, a new 7.3L V8 has been added to the product offering. It features technological updates that Ford sums up thusly:

“(The new engine) uses an all-new cam-in-block, overhead valve architecture with cast iron block and forged steel crankshaft for maximum durability. Port injection with variable-valve timing optimizes the intake and exhaust to match performance with workloads. Oil jets cool the pistons under heavy loads.”

The diesel engine, a 6.7L Power Stroke V8 unit, is now on its third generation. It features a new fuel-injection system and new injectors designed to optimize combustion.

Every engine is wedded to Ford’s new Torqshift 10-speed automatic transmission. Interestingly, though it features four more speeds that the transmission it’s replacing, the new unit is the same size and weighs only 3.5 lb more. It also allows the vehicle to suggest different drive modes, to adapt to towing needs, slippery surfaces, deep snow or sand.

Ford did not provide any more details beyond those, but realistically we expect there will be an increase in power and in payload and towing capacities. Speaking of which, all Super Duty models can be had with the Pro Trailer Backup Assist system to help with backing-up manoeuvres. Count as well on the presence of wireless charging and drive-assist systems like lane keep alert and emergency braking.

As for the outer shell, there are some noticeable revisions to the grille, the LED headlights and the tailgate. Inside, the product offering will include new materials and colour choices.

The 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty will be available for purchase as of fall 2019. No doubt we will be getting more detailed information as the go-to-market date approaches.
