34-year-old gets 20-year jail term for selling opium

AMBALA: The court of sessions judge Vikram Agarwal has awarded 20 years of rigorous imprisonment to a 34-year-old man, Sukhdev Singh, for selling opium. The convict has also been slapped with Rs 2 lakh fine under Sections 18 and 31 of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The court said that the jail term of the convict would increase for two more years if he fails to pay the fine.
On December 28, 2015, a police team led by sub-inspector (SI) Ramesh Kumar, who was then posted in Panchkula crime branch department, was present near Novelty Chowk in Ambala City along with other police officials. Following a tip-off, the cops arrested Sukhdev alias Titu, a resident Ashok Vihar, Ambala City. He was waiting to for his customer to sell contraband.
A notice was given to the assistant commissioner of police (crime), and a team was constituted to conduct a raid at his house. After seeing a police party, the accused managed to flee. SI Ramesh Kumar started chasing the accused. Meanwhile, deputy superintendent of police (DSP) was asked to reach the convict's house for inspection.
During his raid, Pramod found 26 kilograms of opium from the bathroom of the house. The cops had then sealed two samples of 50 grams each and seized the rest.
