JKLF chief Yasin Malik detained while taking out a protest march in Srinagar

A Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant was killed in an shoot-out and a CRPF jawan was injured in a grenade blast in separate incidents in south Kashmir on Wednesday.

A Srinagar-based police spokesman said Irfan Ahmed Sheikh was killed when he and other militants fired at a joint patrolling party in his locality, Chakoora, in Pulwama.

“He was affiliated with the LeT and was known as a district commander. Sheikh has a long history of terror crime records, for which several terror cases were registered against him,” the police said.

The jawan, Shahu Ram, was injured when militants threw a grenade at a CRPF camp in Kulgam. A Class 7 student, who sustained splinter injuries in a grenade blast in Pulwama in in January, died in a Srinagar hospital.

JKLF chief held

The authorities on Wednesday detained JKLF chief Yasin Malik when he started a protest march to press for the release of “political prisoners”, in the Lal Chowk area here. “Putting voices of dissent in jails and claiming democracy are two opposite things,” Mr. Malik said.

A call for the rally was issued by the Joint Resistance Leadership, comprising Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik, to highlight the plight of Kashmiri inmates in jails.
