BHUBANESWAR: The ministry of human resource and development (MHRD) has shortlisted six engineering colleges and Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) from the state for seeking grants from the ministry and the World Bank to improve the quality of technical education. This will be done under the third phase of the Technical Education and Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP).
The six shortlisted colleges from the state are - College of Engineering and Technology, Bhubaneswar, Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology, Burla, Indira Gandhi Institute of Technology, Sarang, Government Engineering College, Keonjhar, Parala Maharaja Engineering College, Berhampur, and Government Engineering College, Kalahandi.
The selected institutions will be eligible to apply for grants needed to bring about changes in the infrastructure of the institutions and improve the quality of education provided. The ministry will also support them in their policy, academic and management practices.
The programme aims to sharpen a student's technical and critical thinking skills, increase transition rate of undergraduate students and ensure participation of disadvantaged groups.
"We have issued a directive to the heads of the institutions to apply for grants under certain components of the programme. We have been also taking steps to bring about their improvement in an inclusive manner," said a BPUT administrator.
