Bengal getting ready for investors’ meet

Our Burea Kolkata | February 06, 2019

West Bengal has received nearly ₹10-lakh-crore worth of investment proposals over the last five years since the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) began. Nearly half of these proposals are in various stages of implementation, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here on Wednesday.

The Bengal Global Business Summit, the flagship global investors’ meet, will be held on February 7 and 8.

Investment proposals last year stood at nearly ₹2,20,000 crore across sectors such as manufacturing, engineering, auto and ancilliaries, transport, IT and ITeS.

According to Banerjee, some of the industry captains such as Mukesh Ambani and representatives from the Adani Group are expected to be present at the investor meet. Other industry doyens who may join include JSW Group's Chief Sajjan Jindal, Future Group head Kishore Biyani, RP Sanjiv Goenka Group's Chairman Sanjiv Goenka, Ambuja Neotia Group's Chairman Harshvardhan Neotia, and others. Apart from industry captains, nearly three dozen countries will send delegations. They include Australia, Czech Republic, France, Italy, Japan, Poland, Republic of Korea, the UAE and the UK.

However, key central government ministers are likely to skip the summit and their absence could be attributed to the deteriorating relations between the BJP-led Central government and the State’s ruling Trinamool Congress.

The focus areas for investment this year will be agri business, IT & ITeS, MSMEs, skill development, hospitality & tourism, logistics & transport, and infrastructure.
