AMBALA: The Ambala Municipal Corporation (AMC) has given the contract of the door-to-door garbage collection to two firms at Rs 1.59 crore for the areas of Ambala City, Ambala Sadar and Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) sectors.
Ambala civic body commissioner Meenakshi Dahiya told TOI the service has resumed in Ambala Sadar areas, and in a day or two, it would also resume in other two areas of the MC.
The service was suspended from the past several months, as the contracts of the past contractors were cancelled by the MC, and later no contractors showed interest in applying for tenders. Therefore, the MC had to relax some norms in favour of contractors.
As per the new contract, the relaxation of collecting user charges has been given to the contractors and relaxation from uploading the photo of the garbage lifting to the MC portal is also given.
Comparison of past contracts
In 2017, this contract was given at Rs 70 lakh, in 2018 at Rs 1.12 crore and in 2019 it has been given at Rs 1.59 crore.
As per the information, the contract has been given to two firms, one whose contract was earlier cancelled by the then MC Commissioner Jaibir Singh Arya in November 2018, and after fining heavily his payment for nearly last six months was halted due to non-performance. This contractor was also issued multiple notices to justify his stand but he was not able to satisfy the MC top officials after which his payments of nearly Rs 7 crore were halted. The second contractor is said to be a new one.
In the past, the Ambala MC had demanded the funds of Rs 15 crore from the Haryana government to smoothly run the operations of the door-to-door garbage collection but recently in a letter dated January 4, the Directorate of Urban and Local Bodies (ULB) Haryana had made it clear that the MC would have to arrange the funds from their own resources. The letter clearly mentioned that it is being sent with the approval from Director ULB, which means the MC would have to arrange funds from its own resources.
