Mumbai witnesses 10th organ donation in just 35 days

Mumbai: After a 68-year-old man from Ulhasnagar was declared brain-dead on February 2 at S L Raheja Hospital in Mahim, his family decided to keep him ‘alive’ by donating his organs to someone in need. This kind gesture saved the life of two-organ failure patients, after they received the man’s liver and kidneys. This is the tenth cadaver donation in 2019.

A doctor said the patient suffered brain haemorrhage (basilar artery bleed), and was admitted to S L Raheja Hospital on January 31. “He was being treated for brain haemorrhage, but his condition began deteriorating and on February 2, he was declared brain-dead,” said the doctor. “The family knew the importance of organ donation and gave their consent immediately for donating her organs in order to save other lives,” said the doctor.

Dr Hiren Ambegaonkar, chief executive officer, SL Raheja Hospital said it was the fourth cadaver donation in their hospital. “It is a significant and progressive step towards building a healthier nation, this gesture by the donor family has enabled life-saving surgeries upon two patients suffering from end-stage organ failure,” said Dr Ambegaonkar.

A coordinator from the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC), Mumbai said, the patient had suffered from comorbidity, which includes brain haemorrhage and chronic kidney failure. “We retrieved his liver and kidneys, following which were sent to two other hospitals in the city,” said the coordinator.

The city recorded its first new year cadaver donation on January 1, when the son of a 61-year-old man consented to donate his dead father’s kidneys. The second donation was on January 8, after the family of a 52-year-old man consented to donate his heart, liver, kidneys, and cornea. The third cadaver donation was carried out on January 11, after the family of a 57-year-old businessman from Vile Parle donated his organs, giving a new lease of life to two critically ill patients.
