RALEGAN SIDDHI: Social activist Anna Hazare ended his indefinite fast on Tuesday after a seven-hour discussion with chief minister Devendra Fadnavis who assured him that all his demands would be met in a time-bound manner.

After his meeting with Fadnavis, Hazare said the government had a concrete plan to resolve the issues he had about Lokpal and Lokayukta, and address his concerns about farmers. “I am satisfied with the assurances and have decided to call off my fast,” he said.

The state and Union governments had been discussing the demands with Hazare for the last two days. On Tuesday afternoon, Fadnavis accompanied by Union agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh, Union minister of state for defence Subhash Bhamre and state water resources minister Girish Mahajan, held a closed-door meeting with Hazare.

They had a letter issued by the Prime Minister’s office to Hazare pertaining to his demands. “A search committee for the selection of Lokpal will meet on February 13 and will take a decision about the appointment. The Supreme Court has some guidelines and steps will be taken accordingly,” the CM said.

Fadnavis said a joint committee, with members suggested by Hazare, would prepare a new Act for Lokayukta in the state. “The draft will be presented during the next full budget session of the state assembly. Hazare wants it to be a model Act for the entire country,” he said.

A committee under the Union agriculture minister will be formed. “Sompal Shastri (former union agriculture minister) will be Hazare’s representative. The panel will deliberate on his demands of setting up a separate national commission for agricultural cost and prices, assured price for farmers. It will present its recommendations by October,” Fadnavis said.

Hazare’s other demand was an increase in the assured income of Rs 6,000 promised in the Union Budget. “The finance minister has assured of raising this amount after additional funds are available. He also suggested that the state governments contribute towards it,” the CM said.

“We want Anna to live up to 100 years and celebrate his birthday. Now, his health is most important and he should get admitted to hospital for a few days and be kept under medical observation,” he added.

The villagers in Ralegaon Siddhi held a gram sabha, during which Hazare said he had considered giving up his life since there was no response from the Centre and the state in the last four years about his concerns.

“After seeing your support, I decided to take up the fight again which I will continue till my last breath,” Hazare said.
