The District Collector has been urged to call a meeting of all stakeholders to solve the issue of flooding near the Aluva metro station, the Aluva Municipality has informed the State Human Rights Commission.
The report was filed in response to a directive given by the Commission. It was issued on a petition moved by persons residing near the metro station and shop owners. They said that it was after the conversion of 62 cents comprising wetland and ponds into a parking slot that the flooding had started. Though a small canal was constructed along the land by metro authorities, it would often overflow during rains. Besides, waste and cables that criss-crossed inside canals in the area had to be removed to ensure free flow of water.
In a report filed before the Commission, the Aluva Municipal Secretary said that the municipality had written letters urging national highway authorities, the PWD, and metro authorities, who had control over the canals, to take steps to remove cables and clean the waterbodies. Except the metro, none had responded to the letters. Metro authorities had informed the civic body that if the National Highways Authority of India removed the cables, they would clean the canals, the report said.
