Mangaluru: The iconic Kadri Park in Mangaluru is all set to get a facelift at a cost of Rs 10 crore.
H R Naik, deputy director, department of horticulture, told TOI that talks to revamp the park were under way and a proposal was ready.
According to Naik, the entire garden and carpeting is set to be replaced. In addition, there is also a proposal to develop the neighbouring area and build a water storage unit there.
“Officials from various departments headed by the district deputy commissioner have already met once in this connection. In addition to replacing the garden and the carpeting, we have also been thinking of making the parking completely self-sustainable,” Naik said.
To achieve this, the committee has considered blocking the road between the two parks – connecting the highway to Circuit House – and lease out this space for food stalls and other commercial activities.
“Besides, we have also been considering developing the Ganganapalya area near the park and setting up a water storage facility there. In addition, plans to beautify the skating rink and creating a subway leading to the rink are also under way,” he said.
The plan, however, is in its initial stage. Currently, a sketch of the project is being readied.
According to officials, the district administration is yet to decide about the funding for the project, while they are confident of tapping into more than one source to pool in the required amount.
“It is yet to be decided whether the development of the park and its neighbouring areas are to be taken up under the Smart City mission,” Naik said.
