The Madurai City police would stringently enforce wearing of helmets by pillion riders of motorcycles, said Commissioner of Police S. Davidson Devasirvatham.

Addressing media persons after flagging off an awareness rally, taken out as part of Road Safety Week, here on Monday, he said that pillion riders and pedestrians accounted for a considerable number of deaths in road accidents. Highlighting that the city police had taken several initiatives to improve road safety, he said that the number of road accident deaths in January 2019 was only 10, an all-time low in a single month.

A total of 250 two-wheelers and around 400 police personnel took part in the rally which started from the Commissioner’s Office and went via K.K. Nagar, Suguna Stores junction, Teppakulam, St. Mary’s Church, South Veli Street, East Veli Street, Nelpettai, Goripalayam and ended at Gokhale Road - Natham Road junction.

Meanwhile, the Transport Department also organised awareness campaigns in different places in the district on the theme of Road Safety - Life Safety. As part of the campaign, Motor Vehicle Inspectors imposed fines on 84 two-wheelers and cars, for not wearing helmets/ seat belts. The riders were also educated on the importance of adhering to road safety rules, a statement issued by the department said.
