Guilty as Charged: Former Jail Steals Top Honor For Best Bed and Breakfast in the U.S.

The best bed and breakfast in the U.S. is a former county jail in Illinois.????The Jail Hill Inn is guilty as charged.????But it’s a good distinction, as the joint took the top spot in the B&B category nationwide, and second place in the entire world based on millions of reviews from TripAdvisor travelers.????Once you’re on the inside, you see why it gets such high praise.????The building in Galena – about a three-hour drive from Chicago – is 140 years old but has been renovated.????The Chicago Tribune says the property’s old jail cells were demolished a while ago, but some fun details remain, like the names of inmates etched into the window frame of a suite on the third floor.????There are six suites total, each coming in at 800 square feet.????With all that space, it hardly feels like a prison.????Especially with the upgrades.????Think fireplaces in the rooms, wet bars, king-sized beds and Bluetooth sound systems.????The nasty jail menus are gone, too.????Guests get champagne and chocolate at check-in, there’s a three-course breakfast each morning and guests even get treated to a daily wine and cheese reception.????Sounds better than prison wine!????All of this opulence will cost you some bail money!????Travel + Leisure says rates start at $295 for a midweek stay and can balloon to about $445 during peak season.????Staffers say they get a lot of repeat offenders who come back time and time again.
