Margao Municipal Council (MMC) chief officer, engineers and  sanitary inspectors, on  Tuesday,  visited the Sonsoddo waste dumping site to  witness the demonstration given by the Innovative  Eco-Care (IEC), wherein  Renerzyme,   liquid containing  positive microbes, was sprayed on waste to contain foul odour.

According to the  IEC officials, once the spraying of  microbes on the waste is done, within  24 hours, the  gases — hydrogen sulphate, ammonia and  methane  generated as byproducts from it are  tackled by the good microbes sprayed on it, and  foul odour is contained.

“There are four types of natural  decomposition process, and there are a few of the things associated with it. When microbial action takes place on the  waste, the three type of  gases  are released as  byproducts – hydrogen  sulphate,  ammonia, and methane.  The  first two gases  which give  foul odour are  tackled by the good microbes. Methane is also fought. The  Sonsoddo  dump  will no longer  emanate  foul smell once this is sprayed,” said  the company official, Prasad Bhagle.

Presently, the  waste at the  Sonsoddo is  stinking.

And, this was evident during the visit on  Tuesday morning to the site. The officials and media  persons watching the demonstration were wearing masks.

“MMC is given a proposal. We saw the demonstration today. The company officials say the stink will go within 24 hours. The  microbes are  sprayed on the  stinking waste that was brought today  morning at the Sonsoddo. We will come on Wednesday again  to see the promised  change.   The company officials claim that their technique would help to reduce the dump.  A final call on adopting the technique would be taken only when we are satisfied about it,” commented the chief officer after the demonstration was completed.

He  revealed   that the  company has made use of the technique in Mumbai and its suburbs.

The company also gave the demonstration in Panaji on Monday.

The  MMC has begun the  door-to- door  waste segregation, and  a system has been adopted to  segregate the waste at  source with the logistic help from the Directorate of Municipal Administration.  What,  however, bothers the civic body, is the  mixed waste that remains dumped in the  border areas.

According to the MMC  sanitary inspectors and the  garbage managing teams, formed by the civic body, nearly ten to fifteen tonne of mixed waste  directly comes to them.
