Nagpur: Maharashtra’s loss is Madhya Pradesh’s gain! The problem tiger of Chandrapur Super Thermal Power Station (CSTPS) which migrated to neighbouring MP and was captured from Satpura Power Station in Sarni has leapt to its freedom again.
The 2.5-year-old tiger was released into the wild in Bori Wildlife Sanctuary (518sqkm) which is now a part of the Satpura Tiger Reserve (STR) in Hoshangabad district. STR is spread in 2,100 sqkm including 1,500 sqkm core and 700 sqkm buffer.
Former MP chief wildlife warden Shahbaz Ahmad, who took the decision to ‘train’ the Chanda tiger in the wild, said, “We had kept options open to release the tiger and hence shifted it to Kanha. There are several successful examples in MP when orphaned tiger cubs were trained and released into the wild,” he said.
The tiger, which travelled over 510km from CSTPS to reach power plant in Sarni making it the longest dispersal in the country, was captured on December 8 after it created scare inside the colony. “Considering its history (killed two people) , it was to be released in Van Vihar, Bhopal, for display but forest officials gave a second thought and we shifted it to Kanha National Park where it was kept in a 6-hectare enclosure away from human imprints,” said SK Singh, field director of Satpura.
“We released live chitals into the enclosure and, during the 50-odd days, the tiger killed over 7. After a go-ahead from experts, it was radio-collared and released in Bori on February 1. The area is a good habitat as all villages here have been relocated. Grasslands have added to a good prey base too,” said Singh.
“The tiger is quite young and needs to be given a chance. It can mate and add to tiger numbers. It has not killed any animal in the last three days. In case of any problem we will capture it,” the field director said.
As reported by TOI, the CSTPS tiger moved out of the power station in mid-August and almost reached Satpura reserve and later Sarni on December 1, after travelling through Wardha and Amravati districts in Vidarbha and Betul in MP.
The problem tiger had killed two farmers in Amravati district. The first attack took place in Mangrul Dastagir on October 19 in Dhamangaon Railway and second after four days in Anjansingi on October 22, both in Amravati district. The tiger mostly preyed on cattle and moved close to human settlements.
