Tamil Nadu Technology Development & Promotion Centre (TNTDPC) of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organised the 4th edition of LITCON, a conference on IP Litigation in Chennai recently.

Praveen Anand, Managing Partner, Anand and Anand, said that government is very proactive in creating awareness about IPR and by the establishment of CIPAM, judges, customs officials, police, students are being made aware of IPR issues. He further said that commercial courts act is one of the key revolutions in Indian IP legal system and felt that 2018 rules are one of the best in the world. He added that judges today are using technology in trails and decisions and taking the best practices being followed across the world.
Earlier in his welcome address, X Arokianathan, Convenor, CII MSME Panel Chennai Zone, & Managing Director, Vitech Enviro Systems P Ltd said that the Courts in India are now increasingly conscious of the importance of awarding damages and are ensuring the establishment of a culture of grant of compensatory and/or punitive damages. He also felt that the establishment of Commercial Courts is a step toward improving India’s IP regime. He also opined that Special Forums and Special Treatment of IP including appointment of experienced IP judges are something yet to be implemented through the newly constituted Commercial Courts Act.
Justice S Jagadeesan, during his keynote address, said Intellectual Property Rights give competitive advantages to the innovators as well as industry and added that IPR encourages creations, innovations and Research & Development. He further said that India is one of the most comprehensive legal system and urged lawyers and judges to be updated on the IPR matters. He opined that Intellectual Property Appellate Board (IPAB) to need to be strengthened further for speedy trails and remedies.
