Vadodara: Two coaches of a parcel passenger train got derailed near platform five of Vadodara railway station on the wee hours of Tuesday morning resulting in chaos at the railway station.
The Kota-Vadodara parcel passenger train was on its way to Vadodara yard from near platform number five when the derailment occurred during shunting. Fortunately, both the coaches were empty.
Soon after the incident that occurred at around 2.44 am, an accident relief train was rushed to the spot from Vadodara yard while a team of railway officials led by divisional railway manager (DRM) of Vadodara railway division Devendra Kumar also rushed to the spot.
Officials suggest that the derailment occurred as the train which was moving towards the yard went to another track instead of the track on which it was supposed to move.
Nearly half-a-dozen trains which were coming from Mumbai to Vadodara on the down line got delayed by 20 to 30 minutes due to the incident even as platforms of several trains which were earlier scheduled to arrive at platform number five were changed.
It was around 6 am that the coaches were re-railed and the train movement started normalising and the tracks were declared fit for train movement.
After the incident, there were talks that the derailment could have resulted into an accident as the parcel-passenger train would have collided with Golden Temple Mail train which was on its way to Vadodara railway station.
But talking to TOI, Vadodara DRM Devendra Kumar, ruled out any possibility of collision between two trains.
“The Golden Temple Mail was scheduled to arrive on platform number six whereas the derailment occurred at platform number five,” said Kumar, after receiving an inquiry committee report for which he had constituted a five member panel earlier in the day.
“At the same time, the shunting speed was 5 km per hour. Since, the speed was less there was no possibility of accident of the train that got derailed. Also, there is a speed restriction of 10 km per hour when the train reaches the platforms. Hence, there were no chances of any collision between two trains,” he said.
DRM has however constituted a high level inquiry committee to ascertain the exact reasons behind the derailment. Due to the derailment, Vadodara-Kota parcel passenger train was cancelled on Tuesday.
