This mini-app is housed under VisitScotland ’s account, 旅行Scotland (Travel Scotland), on WeChat, one of the most popular Chinese instant messaging platform, which has one billion monthly active users (MAU).
The development of the app creates a part of a greater focus by the national tourism agency on China which is currently a priority market and has an estimated international tourism spend of $257.7 billion (£197.6 billion).
From 2011, there has been a 316 percent rise in the number of tourists from China to Scotland with VisitBritain, the UK tourism body – forecasting Chinese visitor numbers across the UK will increase by half over the next five years.
The mini app divides Scotland into four regions and permits the users to browse 200 Scottish businesses, activities, attractions, food and drink, and shopping – which have modified their products to engage with the Chinese visitor market, for instance, by having mandarin speaking staff. Also, the app will allow for additional businesses to be added later on.
2018 witnessed increased Scottish engagement with the Chinese market comprising the first ever direct flight from China to Scotland, the biggest contingent of Chinese buyers taking part in Scotland’s leading B2B travel trade event VisitScotland Expo, and the introduction of social media channels in China by VisitScotland.
VisitScotland organized its largest Chinese travel trade mission to date in November 2018. Sixteen businesses merged with the national tourism body on the business development mission in Guangzhou, Beijing and Xi’An.
The Chinese business development mission gave Scottish suppliers the chance to connect with Chinese buyers personally to help them to shape future products for the Chinese market.
