The movement of container cargo from the Vallarpadam international transshipment terminal was affected for the second day in succession on Monday since operators of around 2,000 container lorries continued boycotting toll payment at Ponnarimangalam toll plaza run by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
NHAI had resumed toll collection on Sunday, after it gave up its attempt to do so 10 days ago following widespread protests.
Container Monitoring Committee convenor Charles George said the anti-toll agitation would continue until the State government and the district administration heard the version of lorry operators who were severely-affected by the devastating floods of August 2018.
Residents exempted
Mulavukad residents have been exempted from paying toll for using the Container Road, while those residing within 20 km from the toll plaza may avail discounts, it is learnt. Residents living within 20 km of the plaza may take a monthly pass of ₹255 and ply unlimited trips on the stretch.
