NEW DELHI: Delhi University will be implementing the economically weaker sections (EWS) quota and 25% increase in seats in two phases — 10% from this academic session and the remaining 15% next year. With the new quota, there will be 6,550 more seats in undergraduate and postgraduate courses this year.

The admissions committee in its meeting on Wednesday also suggested developing of a mechanism to avoid duplication of registration data and to finish the admission procedure before the session commences. This is expected to bring a marked change as usually the admission process goes on even after the academic session starts, said a committee member.

DU to increase 6.5k seats due to EWS quota

A centralised admission process under the children/widow of armed forces category from this year will make the process easier for such aspirants. Last year, DU had increased the sub-categories in this category.

The committee has also taken measures to make the admission process simpler. A tutorial video will be uploaded on the DU website to educate students how to fill the admission form. There will also be filled dummy forms available for students to see on the website. The chairman of the committee, Rajeev Gupta, said, “Usually applicants apply through cyber cafes. This often creates a problem for them as multiple mistakes happen, which often don’t get rectified.”

DU will also start a special drive for students from Northeast. A bulletin of information will be released in both Hindi and English from this year.

The university was unable to meet the January 31 deadline for providing details on the seat matrix and financial requirements for implementation of the 10% EWS quota as most colleges were unsure of implementing the 25% increase in intake capacity for all programmes at one go.
