The Tamil Nadu government now has a separate fleet of vehicles to serve new mothers. On Monday, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami commissioned 15 new vehicles under the 102 ambulance service for new mothers under the health and family welfare scheme.
Under the scheme, launched in 2013 by the then Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, as many as 146 vehicles are in service. So far, 3,95,205 new mothers have benefited, according to a release.
Mr. Palaniswami also distributed appointment letters to seven of the 72 persons who had been selected by the Medical Recruitment Board for the post of yoga and naturopathy medical assistants and assistant professors. The board has so far recruited 10,931 doctors, 9,533 nurses and 4,200 healthcare workers.
D. Paulselvi, a nurse who lost her sight, received a cheque for ₹5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
Transplant recipient hired
Mr. Palaniswami also handed over the appointment order to R. Narayanaswami, who underwent bilateral hand transplant at the Government Stanley Hospital last year.
Mr. Narayanaswami, who hails from Athur taluka of Dindigul district, was a mason till 2015, when in an electrocution he lost both his hands. At Stanley Hospital’s Plastic Surgery Department, his hands were transplanted simultaneously in a 13-hour surgery in March last year.
On Monday, he was appointed as supervisor of Ward 500, (dedicated to patients under the CM Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme) of the Government hospital in Dindigul.
