South African Minister of Tourism Derek Hanekom stated that in a Chinese New Year celebration organized by the Chinese embassy that South Africa has around 100,000 Chinese tourists every year.

“We could massively grow this number,” Hanekom said.

In last year, South Africa and China signed memorandums of understanding, among them was visa simplification for Chinese business as well as leisure travelers to encourage tourism.

Hanekom explained that this was one step toward making it easier for Chinese travelers to get hold of South Africa visa.

He disclosed that South African government is considering issuing 10-year-multiple-entry visa and e-visa to Chinese tourists.

The South African Department of Home Affairs is exploring the likelihood of recognizing prior or other visa in Chinese passport, like Schengen visa, U.S. visa or Australian visa.

Also, the tourism minister took an oath that the visa application-approval process will be concentrated to five days while developing security for tourists.
