Mumbai: Five days after a man had attacked his ex-girlfriend and later attempted suicide at Sanjay Gandhi National Park, police are yet to make any arrest in the case. The accused, Kunal Bavdane (22), is still recuperating in the hospital while his ex-girlfriend has been discharged. Police have recorded the woman’s statement and are awaiting doctor’s nod for them to take further action against Bavdane.

According to the police, on Jan 30, Bavdane had slit the woman’s throat with a pocket knife that he was carrying before attempting to end his own life. Bavdane first slashed the woman’s throat, after he had a verbal spat with her about their relationship, he then cut himself on his neck and abdomen with the same knife. The locals witnessed the entire incident but no one intervened at the time of the incident. Later, the locals rushed them to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Hospital and alerted the police.

Sanjeev Pimpale, a senior police inspector of Kasturba Marg police station said, they have booked Bavdane for voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons (section 324) and attempt to murder (section 307) of the Indian Penal Code. Pimpale said, “The woman and Bavdane were immediately rushed to the civil hospital at Borivali (E), where they were administered medical treatment. The woman was discharged from the hospital on Sunday, while Bavdane is still recuperating.”

A doctor from the hospital said, Bavdane’s injuries will take more time to heal, as he had slashed his abdomen using force, due to which he lost a lot of blood.  Police officials said, the couple had an on-off relationship since mid-2018. The two had started dating when they were met in the same college. “Since the youth was carrying a knife with him, we suspect it was a premeditated attack,” said Pimpale.
