  • The post set off a debate online about the question of inviting an ex to a wedding

A bemused bride-to-be has shared her ex-boyfriend's rather cheeky response to an invitation to her wedding.

Taking to an Australian Facebook group, the woman revealed a photo of the invitation along with his reply - clearly intended as a joke - revealing a particular song he wanted played.

'My ex-boyfriend just RSVP'd to my wedding and look at the song he requested,' she wrote.

Under a section on the invitation which read 'I promise to dance if you play... ', the woman's ex had written: 'I loved her first - Heartland'.

Although it was clear the woman hadn't taken her ex's reply seriously, the post sparked off a debate among commenters over the issue of inviting a former partner to a wedding.

'She's just asking for trouble,' wrote one social media user.

'Weddings are expensive and most people cut down the list as much as they can. Inviting an ex says she's not over him or she has a s**t ton of money and wants to make him feel bad or jealous (which goes back to her not being over him.'

Another chimed in saying: 'I'm still friends with an ex and if I was having a big wedding, I would invite him and his gf (girlfriend).

'However, if he was getting married and his gf didn't want to invite me, I'd be completely okay with that too.'

'I am very good friends with my ex and this seems like something he would do but to be fair I think our situation is different since we broke up, because I came out as a lesbian,' a third shared.'

'One of my exes was a groomsman in our wedding party,' said a fourth. 'He's a great guy, but we were NOT going to make it long term.

'His wife is amazing, and I am proud to count them amongst my dearest friends.'

The issue of whether to invite an ex partner to a wedding proved to be a topic of contention among those who'd seen the photo of the invitation online.

While those sharing their thoughts appeared to do so in all seriousness, a woman revealed the original poster and her ex were on good terms, and there was, in fact, nothing to worry about.

'I saw the original post of this,' they wrote. 'She clarified that there were no ill feelings between them and that it was a joke.

'She showed her fiancé and he laughed too.'
