The Cheranelloor panchayat will observe ‘black day’ on Wednesday in protest against the move to acquire land for widening National Highway 17. A statement issued by the combine of people protesting against the government move said black flags would be hoisted before houses and institutions to protest against the land acquisition programme. The protesters prevented officials who arrived at Cheranelloor to undertake land survey, said the statement. They said the acquisition should not be initiated without conducting an impact study as well as completing hearing on the land acquisition process.
