GURUGRAM: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will start work on the IFFCO Chowk underpass from Wednesday, and it is likely to be completed by March, according to officials.

Earlier, the work could not be carried out because a petrol pump was coming in the way of the underpass.

Last week, the Supreme Court had given a week to the petrol pump owner to shift from the site. Owner Sukhjit Mann and Haryana Shahari Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP) had been clashing over the alternative plot for the petrol pump since December 2016. However, after the court intervened, a plot near the Rapid Metro Station in Sector 26A was given to Mann and she is happy with it. She said, “I was given a week to dismantle the petrol pump and obeying the court’s order, we have started doing that.”

HSVP officials said that they had handed over the land to Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) and GMDA officials said that in principle, they had transferred it to NHAI.

The NHAI consultant said that the underpass work would start from Wednesday. Saurabh Singhal, the traffic and transportation expert at Bloom Companies, the NHAI consultant for the IFFCO Chowk project, said, “We are hopeful that the underpass will be completed by March.” A senior NHAI official comfirmed this.

The Rs 285-crore IFFCO Chowk project was announced in September 2016 and was scheduled to be completed within the next 15 months. The project cost was to be borne by the state government (25%) and NHAI (75%).
