Icy pole offer leads to carjacking

A woman who was offered an icy pole was then threatened with a knife in an attempted carjacking in the state's north this morning.

The 26-year-old was sitting in a car outside her Mildura home when another woman approached about 2am

The woman was offered an icy pole. When she declined, the other woman produced a knife and asked her to get out of the car, police said.

The victim beeped the horn and ran from the car. A 30-year-old woman was arrested at the scene.

Transport update

The truck involved in an earlier breakdown on the Monash at Malvern has been moved to the emergency lane. Traffic is still affected.

And on the trams, there's a "traffic incident" on Commercial Road.

Matt Golding's take on yesterday's final report into misconduct in the financial sector:

Man dies in horror crash in Melbourne's west

A man has died and three others were injured when their car hit a tree west of Melbourne.

Emergency services were called to High Street in Melton West about 9.30pm last night.

The man, aged in his 40s, died at the scene. The man in his 20s was airlifted to The Alfred hospital with serious head, chest and leg injuries.

Two teens were taken to the Royal Melbourne in a stable condition.

The man's death brings the state road toll to 28, compared to 20 this time last year.

Odd spot

Folk in the the German town of Hilgermissen have tossed out a plan to name its streets. Addresses now consist of a house number and the town’s name. The local council argued street names would ease confusion for emergency services and deliveries, but that was rejected in a poll of its 2200 residents.

Verdict in for Australia's financial sector

Back to the fallout from the banking and financial services royal commission.

It was a massive day for the banks yesterday, as the final recommendations were handed down from Justice Kenneth Hayne.

But according to Adele Ferguson, one of the journalists whose reporting brought about the commission, the ending featured little of the expected blood and gore. It was more of a soft landing.
And now the regulators which failed bank customers are being trusted to fix the mess. Read her analysis here.

Or read the verdict in Kenneth Hayne's own words.
