'That is like a horror movie': Experts are left baffled by mysterious 'baby rat' creature found crawling on a kitchen floor

A New Zealand man has been left baffled after finding bizarre-looking alien-like creatures crawling across his mother's kitchen floor.
Tim Clerke, from Auckland, in New Zealand's North Island, took to social media in a bid to uncover the identity of the abnormal looking animals last week.
Mr Clerke asked his Facebook friends for their help in identifying the creatures that have been dubbed as something out of a 'horror movie'.

He wrote: 'My mother found these on the kitchen floor this morning. One is still alive.
'Anyone know what they are? Nikki is horrified and will have nightmares for weeks,' he added.

Mr Clerke also shared a video of the odd creatures to his Facebook page.
In the short clip the strange looking specimens, which have small round bodies and long thin tails, can be seen squirming around in someone's hand.

Despite Mr Clerke's efforts to enlist the help of the Internet, social media users were left racking their brains in a bid to figure out what the creatures could be.
'[It's] like someone cut the bottom end off of baby mice,' one person noted.
'That is like a horror movie,' a second wrote.
While another scared user added: 'I'd like to believe it was a hoax, then I could sleep better.'
'Deformed baby mice,' one user guessed, while another suggested: 'Those are miniature bats'.

'Is someone holding them? [Oh my god] vomit,' said another disgusted user.
Despite the video amassing over 3,000 views, users were still none-the-wiser as to what the animals were.
Even experts couldn't come to a conclusive decision on what type of animal appeared in the video.
The Biosecurity New Zealand entomology team suggested the video showed the detached legs of a moth.
'They suggest that something [possibly a cat] had just recently eaten the body of the moth, which may explain why a few of the legs were still twitching,' a spokesperson told Yahoo!7.
While experts from the University of Auckland had an entirely different theory and said the video was a hoax.
And in a third differing opinion, Eric Edwards, an insect expert, said it was possible the unknown specimens could be a rat-tailed maggots.
The true identity of the animals is yet to be confirmed.
Earlier this month, an Australian back-packer stumbled across a rat-tailed maggot in Lake Bolac, in Victoria's Western District.
In an attempt to try and solve the mystery, Guy Shlomi took to social media to share a video in an attempt to uncover the animal's identity.
It was later confirmed by an entomologist that Mr Shlomi had found a hoverfly larvae, which is more commonly known as a rat-tailed maggot.
