CM throws open irrigation project in Koraput district
Satyanarayan Pattnaik | TNN | Feb 5, 2019, 23:08 ISTKoraput: Exactly 15 years after its foundation stone was laid, chief minister Naveen Patnaik inaugurated the much-awaited Telangiri Irrigation Project (TIP) during his visit to Jeypore on Tuesday.
“The project will provide irrigation facilities to at least 9,952 hectares of agricultural land in 52 villages under Jeypore and Borigumma blocks. Undoubtedly, it will strengthen the economy of farmers in the region,” said Naveen, while speaking at the youth conclave organised by the Biju Yuva Vahini.
Started in 2004 with a budget of Rs 104 crore, it took 15 years for the state government to complete the project. During the period, the budget escalated to Rs 992.85 crore. The chief minister also inaugurated several other projects including tribal hostels, lift irrigation projects, roads, bridges and anganwadi centres worth around Rs 1136.41 crore. He also laid the foundation stone of projects worth Rs 749 crores.
“My government is committed to strengthening communication in the KBK region and we will be constructing two high-level bridges in Dasmantpur block and one high-level bridge in Lamataput block over the Kolab reservoir to provide better communication facilities to villages surrounded by the backwaters of the Kolab reservoir,” said Naveen.
Thousands of Biju Yuva Vahini activists from Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur and Malkangiri districts attended the programme.
Police detained over 100 Congress activists, while they were proceeding towards the chief ministers meeting place demanding appointment of local candidates in government jobs. Adequate security arrangements had been made for the chief minister’s visit and no untoward incident was reported, said SP (Koraput) Kanwar Vishal Singh.
