ATLANTA — The 2018 season was a dream come true for Devin and Jason McCourty.

All their lives, the twins played together — at least until the NFL came calling.

It took Jason McCourty 10 years to join his brother Devin in New England, but it was worth the wait. The veteran cornerback went from an 0-16 Cleveland Browns team to winning his first-ever Super Bowl while playing in the same secondary as his brother.

“0-16 last year, Super Bowl champion this year,” Jason McCourty said. “I couldn’t have thought this up man… I remember when I first came here to this team in April, there was a whole media spectacle that it wouldn’t be any fun here. It’s my third organization in my 10th season. I haven’t had more fun than this season.”

Both McCourty twins started in the Patriots Super Bowl LIII win over the Los Angeles Rams. Playing in his first Super Bowl, after making his playoff debut this year,  Jason McCourty had one of his best games of the season, breaking up two passes. He also made one of the biggest defensive plays of the game.

At 3:42 of the third quarter, a blown assignment left Brandin Cooks wide open in the end zone. It was actually Jason McCourty’s mistake, but when Jared Goff threw the ball to the receiver, the veteran cornerback sprinted over and knocked the ball out of Cooks’ hands at the last second.

Instead of a touchdown, the Rams settled for a field goal

“I’m ecstatic,” Devin McCourty said when asked about his brother. “That guy, humbly came here, opening said, ‘I’m willing to accept any role you had for me. I just want to be a part of the team.’ You guys know it, starting in training camp, ‘is he going to make it? Is he not going to make it?’ Six plays the first game. Started throughout the rest of the season. He’s played deep, he’s played inside, he’s played outside, he’s covered tight ends, receivers.

“He’s been the Patriot guy. That Swiss Army knife all year. I think he’s been great inspiration and motivation since we’ve been down here in Atlanta. He’s had great perspective and enjoyed every bit of this trip.”

This week, there’s been speculation that the McCourty brothers might retire. On media night, last Monday, Devin McCourty said he would think about retiring if the Patriots won since winning a Super Bowl with his brother would be hard to top.

Well, the twins did just that on Sunday, winning a Super Bowl together. We’ll have to wait and see if they’ll play against next season.

“I don’t know. I’m going to enjoy this. I don’t even know what I’m going to do tomorrow,” Devin McCourty said when asked about his future. “Just got to have fun and enjoy this. Like I said all throughout this year, there’s going to be no special year like this year. Just the fun we had, group we had, playing with my brother, the guy I started playing with at 10-years-old. To come out here and play a whole season and win a Super Bowl together, it’s amazing.”
