Swimmers fume as BMC shuts leaky Ghatkopar pool

MUMBAI: Several members of the municipal swimming pool at Ghatkopar have been left out in the cold since Thursday as the pool has been shut for use.

Many of the regular swimmers who use this pool said that while a notice has been put up, stating that the pool will remain shut, they said there are no instructions regarding whether members are eligible, until the reopening, to use the other civic pools at Chembur or Shivaji Park or Andheri. Former corporator from Ghatkopar Pravin Chheda took to social media over the issue.

Chheda, who is a former Opposition leader in the municipal corporation, said that the filters at the Ghatkopar pool had stopped functioning over the last couple of days due to which the water level in the pool had dipped. “This is one of the most frequently used swimming pools in the locality and has been operating since more than four decades now.

Several regular swimmers are upset that the pool has been shut and there is no commitment given as to when operations will recommence,” said Chheda.

A notice at the pool premises mentions that the water level at the pool has been reducing due to which they are unable to use the filtration plant. “Till further instructions, the pool will remain shut for use. All those concerned, kindly take note,” states the notice written in Marathi.

The pool, which measures 28x28 metres, was thrown open in the 1970s and has about 5,000 members as of date.

A long-standing member of the Ghatkopar pool, Naresh Mehta, said that for him going for a swim daily is an important form of exercise.

The 74-year-old, who has been a member of the pool since its inception, attributed his “good health” to his regular swimming activity. “I have no major ailment at my age, be it diabetes or blood pressure. If this pool is shut for repairs, the least they can do is to allow us to use the other municipal pools in the city,” said Mehta. “But so far, there has been no word on the same from the authorities.”

Manager at the Ghatkopar swimming pool, Limbaji Thengale, said that the filtration plant at the pool has been shut. “We have put up a proposal to the department concerned to come and check the leakage. Once that is done, we will be in a better position to figure out when the pool could be thrown open again.”
