Dog owners across Australia are being warned to check their dog food cans as major brand Hill's Pet Nutrition has issued a recall amid fears some of their products may cause serious health issues.

The global pet food giant is voluntarily recalling 13 select canned dog food products due to them potentially containing elevated levels of vitamin D.

'While vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure,' a statement from Hills reads.

'Dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss.'

'Vitamin D, when consumed at very high levels, can lead to serious health issues in dogs including renal dysfunction. Pet parents with dogs who have consumed any of the products listed and are exhibiting any of these signs should contact their veterinarian.'

'In most cases, complete recovery is expected after discontinuation of feeding.'

The global recall affects Australian consumers who may have purchased Hill's Prescription Diet and Hill's Science Diet canned foods through pet stores, veterinary clinics, or online.

The elevated levels of vitamin D were discovered after a complaint from a dog owner in the United States whose pet was exhibiting symptoms of the condition.

'Our investigation confirmed elevated levels of vitamin D due to a supplier error,' the company confirmed.

They also said they have located the source of the error and have taken steps to ensure it does not occur again.

The company says that no dry foods, cat foods, or treats are affected by the recall and that consumers can contact the outlet where they purchased the product for a free replacement.
