Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Jammu and Kashmir as well as Leh and Ladakh , where he will lay foundation and inaugurate various development projects. Here are the highlights of the Prime Minister's visit:

* Upon his arrival in Jammu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated several developmental projects.

* Addressing a gathering in Jammu, PM Modi said that the previous governments had the tendency to ignore the necessities & sentiments of the country. "Take Kartarpur corridor for instance; had they paid attention, then the land of Guru Nanak Dev would have been a part of India," said the PM.

* Following inauguration of several developmental projects in Leh, PM Modi exuded confidence that he will have the second term as Prime Minister after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. "I have today inaugurated those projects whose foundation was laid by me earlier. I assure you that I will come for the inauguration of the projects whose foundations have been laid by me today," he said.

* The PM launched University of Ladakh which is the first-ever university in the Ladakh region. It will be a cluster university comprising degree colleges of Leh, Kargil, Nubra, Zanskar, Drass and Khaltsi. The university will have administrative offices in Leh and Kargil.

* PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the 9-MW Dah hydroelectric project. Located in Dah near village Datang, this project is a run-of-the-river scheme. Modi will dedicate to the nation the 220-KV Srinagar-Alusteng-Drass-Kargil-Leh transmission system. The foundation stone of this prestigious project was laid by Modi in August 2014.

* He started his visit by addressing a public meeting in Leh wearing a Ladakhi gown and head gear.

* The PM said that the warm reception relieved the little cold he was feeling and he promises "to return your warmth with full interest through development of this region."


* Five new trekking routes have been opened to boost tourism in the region. Protected Area Permit validity has been increased to 15 days which will now allow tourists to enjoy Leh for longer durations.


* The PM said that once Bilaspur-Manali-Leh rail line is completed, the distance from Delhi to Leh will be reduced, benefitting the tourism sector.


* Changes have been introduced to the Autonomous Hill Development Council, Leh, in order to give more teeth to the council in matters involving expenditure to minimise the delay in decision making.


* The PM also laid the foundation of new domestic terminal building and associated works at Kushok Bakula Rimpochee airport- Leh.
