PANAJI: The special investigation team (SIT) probing the case related to police-politician-drug-mafia nexus, submitted a 200-odd page report to the state government. In the report, SIT has stated that no case has been made out against those named in the report.
A senior police officer said, “We have recorded the statement of all those named in the report and have found no evidence against them.”
The state government had asked the SIT not to file FIRs in its probe and had instead asked for a report for further necessary action.
A senior police officer told STOI, “In the report, we have stated that the CBI has already taken action against those whom there is evidence, and that there is need to file a separate case against them.”
Prior to 2012, BJP had raised hue and cry over alleged nexus
Earlier, in October 2013, former MLA Mickky Pacheco had submitted a report in the matter to the House. The report had indicted then home minister Ravi Naik and his son, Roy, Goa police officers from the constable level right up to the director general of police (DGP).
However, at the time, the two members on the House committee constituted to probe the matter — then St Andre MLA Vishnu Surya Wagh and Calangute MLA Michael Lobo — were not in agreement over some aspects of the report and had sent dissenting notes to the speaker.
In January 2018, the state government constituted an 8-member SIT headed by deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Edwin Colaco to investigate the 2013 House committee report on the police-drug-mafia nexus submitted by Pacheco.
This was the state government’s second attempt to investigate the matter. In September 2015, it had asked the anti-corruption branch (ACB) of the vigilance department to probe it. However, the ACB didn’t do so on grounds that such a probe did not fall within its scope.
The BJP, while in the opposition prior to 2012, had raised a hue and cry over the alleged nexus, and had accused Naik of supporting the drug trade. Hence, after forming the government in 2012, the BJP-led government appointed a House committee to unearth the facts.
