HYDERABAD: A Master of Computer Applications (MCA) student from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh was arrested on Saturday by Hyderabad police on the charge of posting “derogatory comments” against YSRCP leader YS Sharmila on the web. In fact, this is the first arrest in the Sharmila defamation case.
MCA student Venkateshwar Rao is reportedly a sympathiser of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) as his family had got a land during that party’s regime in the past.
YSRCP president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s sister Sharmila had on January 14 lodged a complaint alleging that she was being defamed by some persons on the internet by linking her to Tollywood actor Prabhas.
When a top officer of Hyderabad police, who personally supervised the investigation ever since Sharmila lodged a complaint, was contacted by TOI on Saturday about details relating to picking up a student, he evaded the query and refused to share details.
However, it is learnt that student Venkateshwar Rao was nabbed in Guntur. Subsequently, he was arrested. He was being brought to Hyderabad on prisoner on transit (PT) warrant.
“During initial questioning, Venkateshwar Rao claimed his father was given a piece of land in their native place, Prakasam district in AP. Due to this, Venkateshwar Rao has a soft corner for TDP. However, the arrested student has no political affiliation,” credible sources told TOI.
This is the first arrest made by police in Sharmila’s case. In the past, several persons, who operate web channels by uploading a fake story linking Sharmila and Prabhas, were called for questioning under Section 41 of the CrPC.
Venkateshwar Rao was charged under Sections 67 A (Punishment for publishing or transmitting of material containing sexually explicit act, etc., in electronic form) of the Information Technology Act and 509 (Word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC.
