Victoria Bushfires LIVE: bushfire in Walhalla, in Baw Baw region, could threaten homes and lives

Walhalla bushfire could 'threaten homes and lives'

An out-of-control bushfire in Walhalla, in the Baw Baw region, has the potential to threaten homes and lives, according to the Country Fire Authority.

It appears the wind direction has changed, and the bushfire is travelling in a westerly direction towards Walhalla.

Spotting is occurring in and around Walhalla.

I'll see what else I can find out from the CFA.

They say the safest option is to take shelter indoors immediately. It is too late to leave.

Coopers Creek residents urged to evacuate area

A new warning has been issued at Coopers Creek over an out-of-control bushfire travelling in a south-easterly direction towards Tyer-Walhalla Road.

Residents of Coopers Creek and Boola, north of Tralalgon, are being urged to leave the area.

But don't head in the direction of Walhalla - a separate warning has been issued in that area.

Emergency warning issued for Walhalla area

Emergency warnings have been downgraded to a 'Watch and Act' for fires in:

  • Butchers Ridge and Gillingall, in the state's east
  • Adams Estate in Grantville, on the Bass Coast

But, going the other way, a 'Watch and Act' for Walhalla, in the Toongabbie region, has been upgraded to an emergency warning. Residents of Walhalla and Maiden Town are being urged to take shelter indoors as it is too late to leave.

As it stands, one emergency warning has remained unchanged.

  • Toongabbie, in the state's east

The Hepburn fire was downgraded to a 'Watch and Act' about 6pm, however residents are being urged to keep monitoring the situation in case conditions change.

A Watch and Act remains in place for Seaton, in the Toongabbie region.

Grantville residents packed and ready to flee

An emergency warning was issued about 4pm for an out-of-control fire at Glen Forbes, on the Bass Coast. Residents of Adams Estate, Almurta, Glen Forbes, Grantville have been urged to seek shelter indoors as it is too late to leave the area.

Ms van Nimwegen, a graphic designer who lives in Grantville, says she is packed and ready to flee, if she needs to, probably to Mr Salmon's house in Cowes on Phillip Island.

Some of her neighbours have already fled. ''One of them was in Kinglake [on Black Saturday]. She said 'I'm out of here' she left yesterday and I said 'I don't blame you'. We had a meeting yesterday at the transaction centre in town.

She said an ''unbelievable'' number of firefighting trucks had been through. Bulldozers had built containment lines. Helicopters had dumped water ''over and over'' on Saturday but had since gone to the Hepburn fires.

"We're just monitoring I suppose. that's the best thing, just keep an eye on it and if it looks like it's going to start spotting, get out.

The nearby Grantville Pharmacy has said it would provide medication for those who had been forced to flee their homes and hadn't had time to pick up their prescriptions.

How the Hepburn fire started

The Hepburn fire, which has now been downgraded to a 'Watch and Act', started from a lightning strike on a property owned by AFL legend Robert Walls

Mr Walls said the fire had started on Wednesday but worsened on Saturday, and had burned through half of his 40-acre property.

He said his car was packed and ready to go in case the situation worsened.

Mr Walls spoke with Channel Nine earlier today:

An emergency warning was issued about 4pm for an out-of-control fire at Glen Forbes, on the Bass Coast. Residents of Adams Estate, Almurta, Glen Forbes, Grantville have been urged to seek shelter indoors as it is too late to leave the area.

Emmy van Nimwegen, who lives in Grantville, said she and her partner Cleve Salmon, who live 2km north of the fire near Adams Estate, and also many locals have their bags packed in case they need to leave in a hurry.

The couple have been monitoring emergency services sites and receiving regular texts and the blaze had just flared up.

"The wind is really popping up at the moment so we're just monitoring it, keeping our windows open watching what's going on, seeing if anything starts flaring up, if it starts getting aggressive again.''

The southerly wind was ''a bit of a worry so we're just watching it. It's cooled down a bit outside, but there's a really strong wind''.

She said there were lots of little fires still burning in thick, inaccessible bush near Adams Estate, which helicopters had been dropping water on.

Red Cross launches helpline for Hepburn fire

From the Red Cross:

The Red Cross has opened Register.Find.Reunite. to help people affected by the Hepburn fires get in touch with their families and friends.

People can register and look for someone with Register.Find.Reunite. on the Red Cross website at redcross.org.au from a computer or any mobile device. If internet and mobile devices are down due to the emergency, people can also register and enquire in person at the Daylesford relief centre.

The Register.Find.Reunite. service matches registrations from people affected by an emergency to enquiries made by their loved ones searching for news. Where a match is made, the person who made the enquiry will be notified.

It is important for emergency management agencies to know where people are during emergencies. By registering with Register.Find.Reunite. you are also letting important services know that you are OK and what support you may need.
