Chennai:
The accused, N Hariharan alias Hari of Perungalathur, targeted this one brand as he did not know to ride geared vehicles, said the police officers. He pretended to be a tea-seller while scouting for vehicles to steal. He targeted vehicles parked in deserted places in Mylapore, KK Nagar, Ashok Nagar and also Chitlapakkam. Incidentally, he had previously been arrested in the last three years – by the Saidapet police in 2016, the Selaiyur police in 2017 and the Chitlapakkam police in 2018.
On January 7, he stole a Scooty Pep from the parking lot of Kapaleeswarar Temple in Mylapore and parked it in Saidapet railway station, his usual place to hide the stolen vehicles before selling them off later.
After identifying him from the CCTV footage recovered from Mylapore, the police formed a special team and launched a hunt for him. Meanwhile, sub-inspector Augustine and constable S Prabu noticed Hariharan near Nageswara Rao park and picked him up on suspicion.
After investigation, police said Hariharan carried eight different duplicate keys with which he could unlock any Scooty two-wheeler. Based on his confession, the police also recovered 19 vehicles from his possession.
Meanwhile, the City Police Commissioner AK Viswanathan rewarded the personnel for identifying, chasing and securing Hariharan as they found his features matched with the person they saw on CCTV footage. Steps are being taken to return the stolen vehicles to the respective owners.
A 54-year-old man, who stole only ‘Scooty’ from the parking lots at temples and markets, was arrested. The police said that he was a repeat offender and recovered 19 such vehicles from him.
