VIJAYAWADA: The death of NRI entrepreneur Chigurupati Jayaram has taken a new twist on Saturday after cops took his niece Pulivarthi Madhuri alias Sikha Choudhary, 28, and her friend Rakesh Reddy, 30, into custody.
According to Nandigama police, they tracked Jayaram’s movements through his mobile call data and found that he was confined to a house at Jubilee Hills in Hyderabad for almost 30 hours between January 30 and 31.
“What happened during the 30 hours will unravel the entire mystery,” a police official said. On January 31 evening, Jayaram was suspected to be poisoned and a beer bottle was smashed on his head causing a gash. The culprits then dumped him in his car and left the vehicle at a paddy field at Ithapuram village in Nandigama. The police took Sikha Choudhary and Rakesh into custody and whisked them away to an undisclosed location for interrogation.
Krishna district SP Sarvasreshta Tripathi and Nandigama DSP Subhash Chandra Bose are probing the murder. Sources said Sikha is a major stakeholder in Jayaram’s businesses and held important position as a director in Coastal Bank and his pharmaceutical companies.
At a press conference, SP Tripathi said a few persons were interrogated and nobody has been made accused as of now. He confirmed that it was a murder and were awaiting the FSL report to ascertain the cause of death.
“The culprits did commit the murder in a meticulous fashion without leaving clues. Around eight teams are investigating the killing and we are taking the help of Hyderabad police as well,” Tripathi said. Cops looked into Jayaram’s movements from January 30 and 31 and it was found that he attended a meeting of his Zenotech Laboratories at a hotel in Hyderabad. Sikha Choudhary and Rakesh were also present at the meeting.
The motive behind the crime is not clear, a police officer said. But Jayaram, recently, transferred Rs 4.5 crore to Rakesh telling him to end all ties with Sikha. Tripathi said Jayaram was possibly killed in the wee hours of Friday, indicating that he was murdered in Hyderabad itself.
Also, while Sikha is as a major shareholder in Jayaram’s businesses, she still did not possess the ownership documents indicating that there are disputes between them.
