Nagpur: A 35-year-old woman has committed suicide by hanging herself to an iron hook on the ceiling with a rope on Saturday at Wathoda Road. Priyanka Chawre, mother of two, allegedly committed suicide over demands for money from self-help group (SHG) members as well as her in-laws.
Family members of Priyanka told TOI that she was depressed since a few days as she had to pay Rs2,500 to the SHG in her area. “On Saturday evening, three women from the SHG visited Priyanka’s house and spoke to her about the money. She was upset after this, and got into a fight with her husband Dev Anand. Just a few hours after this she took the drastic step.”

It is learnt that Priyanka was found hanging by her brother-in-law’s wife, who raised an alarm and called for help. Dev Anand, who works as a driver, was not present when the incident took place. Priyanka was taken to a private hospital before being referred to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where she was announced brought dead.

However, the other theory from Priyanka’s brother Arvind Kale alleges that her in-laws had been harassing her to bring money from her father, who recently retired from NMC. “My sister told me that she was tense since a few days as her family members were asking her to bring money from her father,” said Kale.

Meanwhile, Priyanka’s post mortem was conducted at GMCH on Sunday. Nandanwan police have currently registered a case of accidental death, while they are probing the incident from all angles.

It is learnt that Priyanka’s parents are likely to approach Nandanvan police to register a case of abetment against the SHG members and her in-laws.
