Facebook friend robs elderly man of cash, gadgets, arrested

MORADABAD: A 22-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for stealing a laptap, two mobile phones, Rs 24,000 in cash and jewellery from an elderly NRI’s home here.
Identified as Sameer, a resident of Asalatpura locality, the accused had befriended the 75-year-old Mohammad Zahid on Facebook. The accused has been identified as Sameer, a resident of Asalatpura locality. Sameer was charged with robbery and sent to jail.
Police said Zahid, a resident of Nagfani locality, had filed an FIR saying that his 28-year-old Facebook friend whom he had met on Facebook four years ago had visited his house at 11:30 pm on Wednesday. Sameer claimed to be a resident of Lajpat Nagar locality.
Sammer asked the elderly man for coffee. He insisted that both should have coffee. Zahid prepared it and both had it. Zahid fell unconscious and did not wake up till 4 am in the morning. He found himself bound with a rope. When he tried to reach for his mobile in his pocket, he found it was missing and so was the cash.
Zahid’s domestic help who arrived in the morning, released him. They found that Rs 24,000 in cash and gadgets were missing from the house.
Police have gathered the CCTV footage from the crime scene.
Speaking with TOI, SHO, Nagfani police station, Dinesh Sharma, said, “Zahid lives alone as all his three daughters are married and settled abroad, He was a civil engineer in Saudi Arabia.”
During investigation, police scanned Zahid’s call records and found that he and Sameer had been talking with each other for a long time. The two had talked over the phone a day before the incident. A surveillance team was deployed to trace Sameer, who was caught on Saturday.
