Woman ends life; husband, mother-in-law arrested

PANCHKULA: The district police have arrested the husband and mother-in-law of woman, who committed suicide following dowry harassment by them.

The accused have been charged with allegedly strangulating the woman and forcing her to commit suicide.

A complaint in this regard was given to cops by the brother of the deceased, Jagdeep Kumar. The complainant is a resident of Maulijagran in Chandigarh.


He told cops that his sister got married to the accused Rahul Kumar, a resident of Rajiv Colony in Sector 17, Panchkula, on November 24, 2017. "Soon after the marriage, Kamini started getting abused and harassed by her mother in-law and husband over dowry.


Jagdeep also alleged that on March 23, 2018, his sister was thrashed by her husband to bring more dowry. However, the matter was sorted out over phone.


On Saturday, Jagdeep said, he received a phone call that his sister committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan in her room. "My sister was forced to commit suicide as she was being harassed," he told cops.


The cops have registered a case under Section 304-B (punishment for dowry death) of the Indian Penal Code at Sector 14 police station. Both the accused have been arrested.
